By reforesting pastureland in Costa Rica, we are helping both the climate and the local people.
Sustainable and social
With Bosque Azul, we aim to counteract the ongoing loss of forests.
Tropical rainforests stabilize the climate by storing large amounts of CO₂. One hectare of rainforest can absorb more than 700 metric tons of climate-damaging greenhouse gases.
Additionally, the moist of the forest counteracts increasing drought and provide habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species.
What we do
Our work began on a 31-hectare site in the Carara–Turrubares district of San José Province, located within the Paso de las Lapas Biological Corridor and close to Carara National Park.
Thanks to the support of many people in Germany and our partners at Macaw Lodge in Costa Rica, we are able to bring the vision of the Bosque Azul Association to life.
The 31-hectare property property features a secondary forest with native species, an old plantation of Melina, a fast-growing introduced species, and land designated for reforestation.
Our current focus is on restoring eroded areas within our property using tree species native to the region. For this purpose, we have begun cultivating around 3,500 young plants in a tree nursery, which will later be planted with the support of workers and volunteers.
At the same time, we also recognized the need to reforest areas beyond our own land that play a vital role in water conservation for the neighboring communities of Bosque Azul.
